InterContinental Cascais-Estoril Review: A Welcoming Retreat in Portugal

An ocean-view room, exceptional service, memorable dining, and an easy coastal walk into Cascais. Here’s why this was one of my favorite solo luxury hotel stays in Portugal.

Location: Estoril, Portugal
Stay: January 2024
Travel style: Solo luxury travel
Room: Upgraded ocean-view room
Would I return? Absolutely.

My Overall Impression

Some hotels are beautiful in photographs but fail to deliver the experience you’re expecting. The InterContinental Cascais-Estoril was the opposite: a property that managed to impress me with both its setting and the little details that make a luxury stay memorable.

I visited in January 2024 during a solo trip to Portugal, looking for somewhere comfortable and relaxing along the coast, with convenient access to Cascais and Lisbon.

From the welcoming staff to the ocean views, excellent food, and thoughtful touches throughout my stay, the hotel exceeded my expectations.

My biggest regret was not staying longer.

Location: A coastal retreat within walking distance of Cascais

One of the hotel’s greatest strengths is its location along the coast in Estoril.

A waterfront walking path runs near the property, and I could reach the center of Cascais in approximately 20 minutes on foot. It’s a beautiful walk with ocean views along the way.

I appreciated having the option to spend time exploring Cascais without needing to drive, while still returning to a quieter hotel setting.

The location also works well for travelers interested in visiting Sintra or exploring the surrounding Lisbon coastline.

I had a car during my stay and used the hotel’s valet parking, which cost €15 per day at the time. I found that reasonable for the convenience, although current parking rates may differ.

The Room: Ocean views and genuinely comfortable accommodations

I received an upgrade to an ocean-view room through the booking benefits associated with my reservation.

The room had a spacious balcony overlooking the Atlantic, complete with a comfortable seating area. Watching the ocean and distant ships from my room was one of my favorite parts of the stay.

Inside, the accommodations felt equally inviting.

The bed had the ideal balance of softness and support for me, with fluffy pillows, effective blackout curtains, and air conditioning that kept the room comfortable.

Despite being located directly below a dining area, I wasn’t disturbed by noise. There are also train tracks on the other side of the hotel pool, but the room’s sound insulation worked well enough that they didn’t interfere with my stay.

The bathroom was particularly spacious, with dual sinks, a large vanity, separate glass-enclosed shower and toilet areas, and a soaking tub with a privacy screen.

Everything felt exceptionally clean and well maintained.

Service: The details that made the stay special

Service was one of the highlights of my experience.

From the moment I arrived, the staff were welcoming, professional, and attentive without being intrusive.

Daily housekeeping kept the room immaculate, while evening turndown service included chocolates—a small touch that added to the luxury experience.

I also received welcome treats, including fruit and small confections.

None of these details would have been enough to make up for a disappointing hotel on their own. But combined with the comfortable room and beautiful setting, they made the entire experience feel polished and thoughtful.

A sweet welcome treat to kick off my stay.

Dining: A surprisingly memorable part of the stay

I ate several meals at the hotel, and the food was consistently impressive.

Room Service

On my first evening, I ordered room service rather than heading out.

I chose the Presunto Iberian smoked ham and Neapolitana pasta, followed by a Belgian chocolate sablé with pistachio ice cream.

Everything was delicious, and the dessert was a particularly memorable finish.

Breakfast

Breakfast offered both a substantial buffet and an à la carte menu.

There was a wide selection of hot and cold dishes, and I enjoyed a latte while sampling the buffet.

For a hotel where I was happy to spend a slower morning enjoying the view and atmosphere, breakfast was a genuinely pleasant experience rather than just a convenient meal.

I couldn’t resist trying a little of everything!

Dinner at the restaurant

Rain on my second evening gave me a good excuse to eat at the hotel’s restaurant.

I ordered sea bass, which was cooked perfectly and was the standout dish of the evening.

The accompanying barley stew was tasty initially, although I found the flavor somewhat repetitive by the time I’d eaten most of it.

It was a minor criticism in an otherwise excellent dining experience.

Spa: A relaxing way to spend a rainy day

My reservation included a US$100 hotel credit as part of the booking benefits I received.

I used it toward an aromatherapy massage, which turned out to be an excellent choice during the rainy weather.

The treatment added another relaxing element to a stay that already felt like a proper escape.

It’s worth checking which benefits are available through your particular booking channel and rate, since credits, upgrades, and breakfast inclusions aren’t necessarily standard with every reservation.

Is the InterContinental Cascais-Estoril good for solo travelers?

Based on my experience, absolutely.

I felt comfortable enjoying the hotel on my own, whether ordering room service, dining at the restaurant, visiting the spa, or walking along the coast.

The combination of attentive service, a peaceful room, and an accessible location made the property particularly appealing for an independent traveler who enjoys luxury without needing a packed itinerary.

You could easily spend your time here relaxing, exploring Cascais, or using the hotel as a comfortable base for discovering more of the region.

What I’d consider before booking

There are a few practical details worth keeping in mind:

  • Room views matter. My ocean-view upgrade was a major part of what made the stay special. I’d prioritize an ocean-facing room if the price difference makes sense.
  • Check your booking benefits. I received an upgrade and hotel credit through my reservation, but these shouldn’t be assumed for every booking.
  • Consider the season. I visited in January and encountered some rain. That didn’t diminish my experience, but it may affect how much time you spend outdoors.
  • Train tracks are nearby. I didn’t experience meaningful noise disruption, but particularly noise-sensitive travelers may want to ask about room placement.
  • You don’t necessarily need a car for Cascais. The coastal walk is convenient, although a vehicle may be useful for exploring farther afield.

Final verdict: Would I stay again?

Without hesitation.

The InterContinental Cascais-Estoril delivered exactly what I hope for from a luxury hotel: an excellent room, beautiful views, genuinely attentive service, and food worth remembering.

It felt refined without being uncomfortable or overly formal, and it was a particularly enjoyable place to spend time traveling solo.

For anyone looking for a coastal luxury escape near Lisbon, especially with easy access to Cascais, this is a hotel I’d happily recommend.

My only real regret was not booking a longer stay.
